Some more avast! service questions :-)

Got it working and tresferred all settings from the Access database.
Wow, the XML file is only 18K (database 464K) and of course the service is not doing i/o all the time anymore. And I think the XML file is easier to look at as well.

The main reason XML is not used by default is that:

  • for avast Pro, XML is a real drag. We need people to use ODBC to take advantage of all these features
  • upgrading from Home to Pro would require us to switch to ODBC - but that would cause loss of all settings
  • we like when people upgrade from Home to Pro

A solution would be to write a migration tool (XML → ODBC), but it’s a lot of work - and simply doesn’t exist in the moment.

For the upcoming future, we will probably create yet another storage type - which will overcome the limitations of both of them.

I wasn’t that hard to move settings from Access to XML (ok, I’m a programmer), so I guess it isn’t that hard the other way either. But a new solution that replaces both would be nice (maybe I’ll upgrade).

Lars, why don’t you help me here?

Sounds interesting, Lars

I really appreciate that… 8)
But, in the past, other users promissed and did not help… I hope you could help me (and all avast users), for sure
