Some process related to update keeps crashing (Vista64)

These are the details Windows gives me.

Honestly this is the first real problem Avast has given me. However it says setup in the name, im hoping its actually updating.

Check the folder \data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Yes, avast.setup is the update vector.

This is the true culprit:
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll, a windows dll.

The avast.setup just happened to be using it when there was a problem with ntdll.dll.

Personally I would wouldn’t waste time trying to chase this unless it is a regular occurrence.

DavidR, Normally I wouldn’t bother with a small error at all, but with this involving the updater, I am concerned its keeping the program from being updated. As for frequency, it seems to do it whenever it tries to update.

Here’s my Taskmanager while it was having some issues the last time. 3 times in 1 day is too frequent for me.

I am simultaneously posting this as I send those mdmp files to the address Tech posted

Are you using the Vista 64bit (or XP Pro 64bit) version of Windows ?
I don’t use a 64bit OS so I can’r be a great deal of practical help if it is related to that.

The other thing is that I see two entries of avast.setup in the task manage image one for system and one for the user, I don’t know if that could be a contributing factor. The auto update process should only launch one occurrence of avast.setup, have you tried to launch it again manually ?
