Having had recent run-ins with malware on my own computer, I was looking at my daughter’s computer to implement some of the recommendations from this forum. She has a Dell Dimension E521 running Windows Vista 32 bit SP2. I loaded Malwarebytes and ran a scan, applied actions, and restarted. The log file is attached and it did suggest there was some malware on the computer.
The first restart went OK, but subsequent restarts would not boot properly into the admin account. It would get to the screen that allows selection of the account, but after selection, would go to a gray blank screen. I tried a whole list of things…
Boot to Safe Mode, successful, but all normal boots unsuccessful. Also selected last known good configuration to no avail.
Thinking Malwarebytes had quarantined important files, I restored all quarantined files, but still no boot.
Performed a system restore to a few days prior to loading Malwarebytes. The computer could then boot up properly, but nothing would work. Clicking on the browser and other apps produced no response except the busy circle.
I had an image of this computer on another hard drive and ended up using Acronis software to clone a new image which restored the system functionality.
I’m afraid to try this again without a way to prevent it. Can any of the resident experts tell me if this is a bug in Malwarebytes? Is there a way to work around this?

Eddy,
Just to confirm you want me to run farbar without first running Malwarebytes?
In my previous post I stated I had restored the computer to the condition it was before running Malwarebytes. I’m sure the same results would be produced if I ran it again, however, if running it causes the non-bootable condition again, I won’t be able to run farbar unless I do it from Safe Mode. I’m not sure if farbar results from Safe Mode are acceptable.
Who is IN21? Was a post deleted?
Yes go direct to the FRST scan please

Requested files attached.
Just a note: I will eventually remove AVG and put Avast on this computer.

Thanks for providing the logs.
Now have patience, a malware removal expert will soon guide you.
While waiting do not change anything on the system please.
If one doesn’t help you soon…
Start feeling sorry for one of them.
I will grab one by the tail and drag him to this thread ;D
Hmm can’t see what MBAM would remove that would cause a boot failure
CAUTION : This fix is only valid for this specific machine, using it on another may break your computer
