Sometimes Avast doesn't run properly?

I think this has happened a few times over the past ~4 months (since I’ve been running Avast).

The quick scanner always gets stuck on “initializing engine”, and doesn’t do anything further. If I start up the main Avast window, it gets stuck while scanning the memory. Clicking “Stop Memory Test” has no effect, but opening and closing the registration window, then clicking stop, causes it to continue to the main screen.

While Avast was in this state, tried extracting a copy of the EICAR test virus from my virus chest, and copied it from one folder to another. This little popup appeared:

But the usual “A virus was found” window did not appear.

I rebooted the computer and Avast started working normally again. What’s going wrong?

try to repair avast

go to control panel>add or remove programs>avast>repair.

if that doesn’t help,uninstall it and download the latest version of avast and install it

OK, I’ve just finished reinstalling Avast. Hopefully it won’t happen again!
