We have a Sonocaddie V100 golf GPS in use. It can only take 10 golf courses at a time and we thus need to download new courses on a regular basis and have done so for the last year.
We installed the latest update of AVAST about a month ago and since then it is NOT possible to connect and/or download from Sonocaddy!
We thought it was their problem and so we were in contact with them and their diagnose was that it has something to do with AVAST??
Can you advise us on where and what to change as to allow Sonocaddie updates?
Thanks for the response!
The message is very much uninformative but it reads: “V100 has encountered a problem and needs to close”.
We use: AVAST Free Antivirus
Program Version 5.0.677
Virus definitions version 100919.0
When we reported it to Sonocaddie their help desk indicated to us that they had the same problem reported by various users of the ‘latest’ Avast - remember that it only started after the latest upgrade/update?
Ain’t there somewhere in the settings of AVAST where one can exclude anything that has to do with Sonocaddie? Thanks.
The problem is that avast free scans and alerts to infection, it doesn’t block, it isn’t a firewall.
So there doesn’t appear to have been any diagnostic check, just anecdotal cases, which happen to be using avast. I’m sure that they probably have anecdotal cases where other AVs are supposedly to blame.
Unfortunately I don’t have SONOCADDIE V100 and know nothing of how you actually connect to their site to get more courses. If you can explain the process of how you get more courses ?
My best guess is that you have to a) a member, b) log on to be able to get more courses. So there would be some sort of flip flop between the logon page , validation and main site/download pages; this would mean moving between http, https and http pages, to do this parameters would have to be past and a firewall with privacy controls might just be concerned about the fact that the avast web shield filters that traffic.
What is your firewall ?
There are exclusions in avast but they are file specific and are really only use for files that are being detected as infected (when you consider they aren’t), but there is no function to exclude what a process does, the files it opens, modifies, etc. that would create a huge hole in your security.
What happens if you Stop the web shield for a short period to connect to the site ?
Don’t forget to start it immediately you have finished.
Thanks again.
You get the software from www.sonocaddie.com
We bought the Sonocaddie 100 equipment and we then register with them and pay a annual fee.
When you execute Sonocaddie it opens a “sign on” screen and we the sign on with user name and password and that’s that.
At present the sign-on screen does not open - it gives that message BEFORE the sign-on screen?

That sounds like it is going between http and https (secure pages), unfortunately I don’t see anywhere on the site that I can click on a link to sign in, to see what it is that you are doing, e.g. the failure screen.
So I can only assume that you connect through the Sonocaddie V100 program installed on your PC/Laptop, etc. and you don’t know the URL or IP address that it is connecting to ?
If you do know the IP address 123.123.123.123, etc. then perhaps we could try excluding that.
I have to say that I’m unsure of how the “V100 has encountered a problem and needs to close” is related to avast as the usual issue of being blocked would be the web browser page not being displayed. So I don’t know why the “V100 has encountered a problem and needs to close” message would be generated.
As you say the message is very unhelpful as there is no detail, it is almost like the bog standard windows error message for a crashed program, so I don’t know who generates this message Sonocaddie V100 or windows.
A firewall that isn’t on your system isn’t a firewall.
So I don’t know how your ISP might even try to implement this or if/how that might impact on avast. But I would have though any impact would be across the board, certainly any site that you have to logon and flip flop through http to https and back to http, etc.
A point of note I don’t work for Avast Software, I’m just an avast user like yourself, so my experience is one of a user and volunteer on these forums for over 6 years.
Thank you - much appreciated!
I assume that you are not from Avast.
The https-stuff is too technical for me, so will get someone
from the ISP to come and have a look.
