I followed the instructions to restore the files after scanning. They are still all listed in my virus chest, although now they show “no virus”. They should all be restored, but the virus chest does not indicate that status. Should I just select and delete them now to remove them from the virus chest? I did a restart and they are still there.
The “restore” basically copies the files to their original location, but doesn’t remove the from the Chest - so yes, it’s normal.
I’d suggest to check whether your programs are correctly restored first (i.e. whether they work)… then you can delete them, if you wish. On the other hand, you can leave them there for some time, just for sure - they don’t cause any problems if they stay there for a while (their copies, I mean), and maybe you’ll find out in a few days that you didn’t restore all of them…?
Thanks. I was afraid to delete them just for that reason.
I have a related question: When following the procedure outlined in “Restoring a false positive file from the Virus Chest?”, when I get to step #8 I do not get the dialog window confirming the file has been successfully restored. Does this mean that the file was not restored? I’ve tried it with many files and have never once seen the dialog window confirming that the file was successfully restored.
Also, during the scan and purge of “infected” files, several files were unable to be moved to the virus chest and were deleted. Now I’m trying to find out which files were deleted but I cannot find that list in any of the logs. Can you tell me where I can find a list of the files that were deleted from my system during the scan?
Thanks.
Depends on how you executed the scan.
In any case, you can use the file \data\log\warning.log to see the list of all detections (see the “Sign of …” lines). You can then compare this list to the files stored in the chest.
Thanks

Give some thought to installing some quality imaging software like Acronis True Image on your computer. After Avast made my computer inoperable, I simply restored to a three day old image and I was back up and running.
From your signature:
XP Pro SP2 fully patched
XP SP 3 has been available for over a year.
Acronis True Image is good.
