Just got a new PC and the ‘Free’ MacAfee AV is about to expire. Having used Avast successfully over many years I wished to change to it before the MacAfee trial period ended. I loaded Avast from Cnet Downloads and received a notification that an update was available which I agreed to. Later my wife asked why the CD she had loaded would not play sound but was OK for Video?
I checked and found that all sounds were lost even though when I opened the Volume control all appeared OK. The only thing I had done today was to load Avast so I decided to revert to the restore point set when I loaded Avast.
Situation now is that I am back to sound working fine but I really would like to get Avast loaded soon.
hello, did you uninstalled “‘Free’ MacAfee AV” first before attempting installation of Avast 5? if so make sure you have updated your computer via windows updates then retry avast again…
Neo 1 is right. Please be sure to completely uninstall McAfee. I am providing a link below to give you details on how this is done if you haven’t done so already. Also, the windows updates as mentioned are crucial to the performance of your operating system maintenance.
Try this first to see if it helps. If it doesn’t, you may have to uninstall avast! as well and reinstall to get your system functioning with it’s software. Not completely sure if this is causing the issue you are experiencing with no sound. That could very well be something else altogether. Worth a try anyway.
Thanks for the advice. No I have not yet removed MacAfee as I try to not leave the PC unprotected if at all possible. But with the advice comes the memory as the problems with MacAfee remnants is why I gave up on MacAfee originally. I had a paid for version and had a computer crash - even thought the I still had 3 months to go I could not get it back up and running at all.
I guess I will to give it a go but worry that it will do the same even with MacAfee removed. Then I would be left wiht no sound and no MacAfee.
If you wish to continue to use McAfee, that’s your own personal preference. The only reason we suggest that you remove it is because you really shouldn’t have two real time antivirus scanners running at the same time. They tend to clash with one another, competing as it were. If that is your wish, then you really should remove avast! as this could create problems for you. The choice lies with you as to which one you would like to use.
No intention to run more than one AV at a time. I dislike MacaFee but was thinking I could download Avast then remove MacaFee so keeping the PC protected.
That’s fine, no problemo. Whatever you decide to do. Just be certain not to execute avast! on your pc until McAfee is uninstalled if that’s what you wish to do. You can execute avast! once you’re finished with removing McAfee while you’re not on the internet and once this is done, it will download all of the latest definitions and program updates for you when you get access to the internet. You’ll be protected this way.
I’m a programmer, and it’s really not hard for me to become confused. ;D Come back and post if you have any more issues. Lots of great folks here to help you. Good luck.
