can anyone recommed a good , free spam blocker ? Thanks !
MailWasher if you are only concerned with one email account (multiple accounts, you will need pro), otherwise check out this thread - Links (for almost everything…)
I don’t know… My Ms Outlook filters junk mail. Maybe you can check here, but no guarantee if it’s effective. http://www.spamresolve.com/ Also, better post threads like this in General Topics. Thanks, and good luck in searching spam solution.
Dear Ylap,
DavidR gave you a sound advice. And you can tweak Mailwasher with the best spam lists. In tools go to Options. There go to Edit DNS blacklistservers. I have got myself this selection: SpamCop, ORDB, Deadbeef, Five-ten-org, Spamhaus, Sorbs, and abuseat.org. Suits me fine. Almost all the spam is found up. Do not use the bounce function though. Just add the non-found to the spamlist, and delete all that is not fit to enter your machine at the providers pop3 server with MAILWASHER. It is a good Australian program, and I cannot say a bad word about it. It not only keeps my spam out, also keeps virus mail out, when this is scanned at provider’s level. How are the temperatures there with you, I heard from a friend that Helsinki was very cold and windy. All the best to you, my friend, surf safe and stay clear from virus and malware,

Personally, I’m still using POPFile (You don’t need to configure Avast and can use it with e-mail app of your liking) but Spamihilator (Search the boards for more information. Tech seems to be using it and his posts are well-informed.) seems to be convenient. K9 is popular, too. Some may recommend Mozilla Thunderbird although in this case, you have to change the email app. All of them are “rule based systems” but they use sophisticated filters based on Bayesian theory. They are efficient as mail filtering apps, which makes your e-mail life easier.
A good piece of advice. I question “challenge-response systems” for they use the net resource by “replying” to spammers who are already overloading it. Spammers are cunning, too. Other than that, I hear Mail Washer is good.
The beauty of MailWasher is you don’t have to download the emails into your inbox in order to filter them, having filtered them you delete them from the email server, they never see your inbox.
This is also very useful with suspicious emails, delete them at source. A friend whom I recommended it too still keeps mentioning it on occasion that it is the best program he has bought. I feel the same way I have had numerous updates all free to date and I have had MW for years.

I’m using POPFile.
I think K9, POPFile, Spamihilator… are good tools.
RBL and SURBL are good ones for a mail server.
I have never received spam since those filtering services were installed, though I had received spam mails every day.
If your not using MS Outlook but a commercial email (like hotmail, yahoo, etc.), they should have a email filter.
