Spammers use new media

Hi malware fighters,

Spammers now reside more and more to the newer web based media like IM, social networking like MySpace.com to spread spam, and more and more take age, location etc. of their victims into consideration to be more effective.
Cybercriminals rather take to targeted attacks than use more traditional methods like virus- and phishing techniques. Spam now totals up to 64.8 % of all e-mail being sent.
The new trend with cybercriminals to-day is to chainlink various techniques like spyware, spam, virus, phishing to be more “productive”. More and more IM-messages and e-mails have direct malware links, where malware and spyware is automatically downloaded unto the victim’s machine. This rather than using more traditional methods like where the malware comes in the form of an attachment to the e-mail itself.
Be aware, an innocent looking mail could easily grow out to mean a real threat.

hi polonus

thanks for the interesting information ::slight_smile:

This is exactly why I stopped using IMs and social networking (such as MySpace) about 5 years ago.

hi CharleyO

never have used IMs and gone to places like MySpace and never will and especially after all the bad stuff you have been hearing recently :o

I’ve always used IM’s and haven’t had any problems.
Remember it’s still the users habits that usually get them into trouble.
It’s not hard to find garbage if that’s what your looking for… ;D ;D

Hi Bob3160,

I know you have never experienced it, because you have safe computing habits, but a lot of peoiple that are not that alert, or new to this are sort of socially engineered in getting this malware. How come that we so many requests in the vurus and worms, do you think?
