speed without VPN speed with VPN
160.3 43.4
108.2 51.0
160.6 67.6
This seems like an excessive reduction.
Is there anything I can do about it?

Hi,
Please try a server close to you (optimal location). https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Use-SecureLine-VPN-standalone/
If you are on Windows 10 you can try the mimic VPN protocol.
Hi. Thank you.
Unfortunately, my Avast interface knows nothing of SmartVPN and looks nothing like the help pages screenshots (because I’m on Windows 7 perhaps). However, whatever my problem is, I now know that Avast is not the main culprit as speeds without VPN are now in the same range as speeds with VPN.
Thanks anyway.
Further -
my Virgin cable hub has now been replaced. D/L speed without VPN on one pc is now 220 Mbps (as it should be) but it’s half that on the other. Strangely though, with Secureline active, D/L speed on the first pc is one tenth (=21 Mbps) but it’s twice that (= 46 Mbps) on the second pc.
All my hardware is Gigabit rated but Windows shows Secureline as being 100 Mbps. Is this as it should be?
Secureline now has so-called SmartVPN with local device access enabled but it seems to not work.
Hi,
There are always lots of variables (e.g. cable or WiFi; applications) that can influence the speed/speed tests. Windows normally show 100 Mbps as the theoretical speed. Local device access should be visible under manual mode. Selecting this option means that you want access to local devices and shared drives while you are connected to a Trusted (private) network. Please test it with your network profile set to Private. https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/Use-SecureLine-VPN-standalone/#idt_035
Windows normally show 100 Mbps as the theoretical speed. So that's correct - seems low.
Using Win7 Ultimate so article not relevant.
Thank you.
Hi,
The article is applicable to Win7 - Win10
In Windows7 - clicking on “NETWORK SECURITY” will show the same settings as in MANUAL VPN MODE (Avast SecureLine for Win10)
I am specifically referring to “Turn on the VPN” > “EDIT NETWORKS”
Please open Avast SecureLine VPN on Win 7 and then go to Menu > Settings > NETWORK SECURITY > EDIT NETWORKS
