If I tell Avast to only scan created/modified files; not to scan files on open, and not to scan exe files, and not to scan dynamic libraries, am I opening myself up for infection?
My reasoning is this. All files first have to be created to get on to your computer ???
By removing the ‘scan files on open’, which by the way have already been scanned when they arrived on my machine, and were scanned if they were ever modified, I am thinking this extra check is unnecessary :-\ Along with exe scanning and library scanning.
Technically you can disable everything on the second tab “Scanner (Advanced)” and still be safe. At least from what i see.
Files will be scanned when you double click them. Just don’t disable options on first page. This one actually excludes entire file types meaning they won’t be scanned at all. Can anyone from ALWIL confirm this or am i missing something?
Just tested these settings when downloading the eicar test virus.
It stopped all but SSL zip files. This I don’t understand. ???
Why didn’t Avast scan the zip file when it was created. I’ve told it to.
Some points to note.
By not scanning every file/exe/dll on open speeds up my general machine usage. Don’t ask me for benchmarks, the performance is plain to see.
By removing these extra checks, a potential virus ‘could’ be downloaded; only when inside a zip through SSL.
This infection threat can be removed by scanning the files once you download them. (e.g. Download manager scans the file once it has fully downloaded it.)
What next? I don’t know. Surely there is a need for scan files/exe/dll on open otherwise Avast! wouldn’t have that option. Please could someone elaborate.
I’ve seen a remark from someone on another forum that says, these lower settings speed up his Vista machine, and boy does a Vista machine need all the speed it can reclaim.
I wouldn’t be happy recommending these lower settings if I thought they would someone make Avast incapable of stopping serious threats.
I couldn’t see any difference when avast! set to Normal sensitivity or when i disable entire second tab. I guess the PC is powerful enough it can handle everything at same speed regardless of settings.
Interesting question… It really improves computer speed (im on vista) but is it really so simple ? i would like the opinion of a member of avast team… By the way, avast 5 (if it comes one day) should really work on reducing computer slowdown
Actually, even though the file was downloaded, when I opened it (unzipped it → created a file) avast! blocked it!
Another user commented that a file without a ‘default extension’ could bypass avast! with these settings. If this could be proven I would try it, but to be on the safe side you might consider changing the scan for created/modified files - ‘all files’. - regardless of there extension.
All right, I did the same settings on avast and , as i have nod32 2.7 as second antivirus, I activated Nod’s AMON monitor (equivalent of “standard shield”) which is really faster than avast’s. now my mails, internet surf and creation of files are monitored by avast and the opening of files are monitored by nod32…
i tested the same settings on a xp computer (instead of vista) and i didn’t notice a speed improvement as big as on vista… :-\
My question is : is avast really working well under vista ? it seems to really slow down under vista specially at startup and with office documents. I didn’t notice this smowdown under xp…
yes, as i said in my previous post (cf page 1 of this topic) , i disabled avast standard shield (except for scan on file creation) and enabled nod32 AMON protection (standard shield). They work together very well (no freeze or bug) and my computer is really faster 8)… and i have a double protection… ;D
