Let us know how you make out. As far as Firefox goes, some users have successfully configured it to work well with Avast.
Yes, it could be the script blocker but I really don’t believe so. If it was, it would remain a bit longer not pop in and out.
Not sure about the synchronization issue brought up by VLK. His knowledge far exceeds mine in the really technical design issues.
From you described, it sounded to me that Avast wanted to start but was interupted during the initial loading of the exe file. You may have set it to run a scan on bootup, but could not due to some corruption. It seemed to have locked itself into an error loop.
Anyway, we will all try to help you fix it as usual.
