Splash Cannot Execute the following program

Long story short: Attempted to upgrade my son’s computer from IE 6 to 8 but 8 would not take (can’t figure out why). So we installed the latest Firefox browser. The issue now is Avast 4.8 will not a) update and b) when we attempt a scan it will proceed through the memory check but after that we get this message:

WARNING! Avast cannot execute the following program C:\Program File\Alwil Software\Avast 4\ ashSimple.exe
Help will be most appreciated. Thanks.

After uninstalling 4.8 I decided to go ahead with the free 5.0 and I must say I like it. The installation went smooth and I like the new and easier way to register. My son’s computer is once again protected with Avast.
