spyware cleaner?

I recently preformed a clean install of XP and repartioned my hard drive. Thus, deciding to break away from the same ol same ol antivirus software Ive used for yrs. I was just wondering do I need to reinstall ad-aware software?

Icmom

I wouldn’t, not because I do not believe you need it but because I don’t believe AdAware is up to the job, just check out my signature and you will see I use two anti-spyware/malware tools one resident the other on demand.

SUPERantispyware On-Demand only in free version.

Or MalwareBytes Anti-Malware freeware (on-demand) version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

Or Spyware Terminator Resident scanner (if you use this don’t install the toolbar or crawler or the anti-virus module).

I don’t think Ad-aware is a good choice…
Check this recent thread about antispywares: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=39144.0

Hi icmom…

Along with what David suggested, I would also recommend SpywareBlaster. You can download it here…

Please be sure to keep it updated, though.

Best Regards…

Looking at DavidR’s sig you can see he as Malwarebytes PRO paid version as his resident protection
Malwarebytes free is “on demand” only as is Superantispyware free and Ad-Aware-free
I recommend One and only one resident anti-malware-spyware in addition to Avast
Free
Spyware terminator- with caveats as above
Spybot with t-timer and (Immunize is valuable without t-timer if another choice is made)
Windows Defender
SpywareDoctor free from google pack( do not install other stuff especially toolbars)
BO Clean
(all of these have different resource requirements and protection levels)
PAid for resident protection
MBAM
SAS
SpywareDoctor regular
Webroot spysweeper
Sunbelt Counterspy
A-Squared
lots of junk out there - make your own list
a good third party firewall is required for both inbound AND OUTBOUND protection
I also like a HOSTS file
Spywareblaster does not update very often and is recommended or Advanced Windows Care -(or both) for active-x protection)

wyrmrider, I suppose you don’t have all that antispyware installed in your computer ???
Probably I won’t have time to update/scan with them to have all of them…

I have several computers and have had all of it- plus pest patrol- installed at one time or another
Win Patrol - scooty is active

This windos 98 machine has Avast, Spybot with t-timer and sd-helper and immunize as active
has all of the on demand scanners that work with W98 scanners for testing
I could not get Spyware doctor to work reliably on this machine- works fine on another
I also have Hostman and the old version of ie-spyads is still there I do
not use ie much so no reason to fool with it unless something better comes along

This machine has Zone Alarm

Xp machine has Comodo Firewall, Avast and Sunbelt Counterspy
It previously had Webroot spysweeper

another xp machine has Comodo, Avast and Windows Defender for active- it takes less resources than Counterspy (non Vipre)
the xp maxhines have various on demand scanners

One Vista 32 bit laptop Comodo and avast and windows defender

I do not have SpywareTerminator on anything but will test sometiome
