nice little article

Those results suck! Ewido beats them all. Spy Sweeper sucks period…

I guess that’s your own opinion or, do you have some facts to prove that point that you
would like to share with us?

I won’t be that hard… Like Bob asked, do you have any prove against the test?
Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor are very good antispywares as far I know.
Anyway, I agree with you that Ewido is pretty good. But, remember, no resident (on-access protection) on the free version :-\

Not only what has been mentioned but I like this in Spy Sweeper. The latest version for which I pay for DOES have a sweep for Rootkit detection and you can delete them, quarantine them etc. My free version of Ewido which is possibly not a fair comparison does not have Rootkit detection as of yet. Boils down to “Different strokes, for different folks” when choosing these programs.

That’s an impressive test result for Spyware Doctor in removing all nine rootkits!

Hi,
Does this test mean that I can’t have good Spyware detections without paying for them?
I do scan with Ewido, Adaware and Spybot every week after updating them.
Spywareblaster, I update everyday if available and that runs all the time doesn’t it.
I already started a thread about Spyware doctor finding all sorts of stuff , and it was decided It wasn’t harmful after being checked by Hyjack this forum and others.

I realize that these other apps do not run all the time, so the chance of spyware getting to my machine is higher. Ewido is always deleteing some spyware or another. I don’t find as many with the other programs.

What I use on my pc for detection are some of both worlds. Some of my programs are free ones, and a few of them I pay for. I pay for the ones that I believe do a better job of detecting Malware. Usually when I do pay for something there is a special price they are promoting at the time so I get the program fairly cheap. One of my spyware programs was less than $30 USD. for 2 years.
Then there are alternative freeware anti spyware programs that I have to more or less catch the first line of Malware. I do believe that you can use a good free anti spyware program. Believe me I cannot afford to pay for all of the programs I might think I would like to have. A person CAN over do the protection thing and waste money, lose efficiency of detection by having too much in the way of protection.

Hi Ro Ro,

Keeping your OS and browser up to date will avoid auto-installing spyware (the stuff that can get on your computer just by visiting the wrong web page) and avoiding downloads from untrustworthy sites will keep you clean of all other spyware.

If your not finding anything with your weekly scans, then I don’t think you need to pay for real time protection.

On the other hand, if you are finding that spyware is getting through, then real-time protection might be a good idea, and the pay products do seem to have better detection according to the reviews.

Certainly when cleaning a badly infected computer, anti-spyware products which can tackle rootkits are going to do a better job, but a good anti-virus should detect rootkits before they can install.

Thank you Frank and Neal,
I have Firefox, Thunderbird and Windows XP 2nd Ed on auto update ( They do have to ask me first to install so I have some control).
I only things that Ewido finds are tracking cookies and I delete them, so I will stay with the freebies for now.
I don’t usually go to questionable sites if I can help it. Scandoo helps with that problem. Not being a game player or downloader of P2P files helps.
I also only use my home computer for 6 months out of the year. The rest of the time I use Cybercafes, so I hate to spend $ for a year subscription.

Hi roro,

The best way to go is prevention. Better one ounce of preventiuon, then a kilo of cleaning spyware out (a rotten job for the novice mainly). So install the three free preventers (ad-aware, spybot s&d and spywareblaster on a clean machine), regularly fire up the free spyaudit scan, and do not allow java and javascript or Flash to run inside the browser, exept from on known sites. Javascript and Flash are still the main two vectors for a browser infection to land on your machine,
