Standard Protection Service minus the tray icon

I installed avast! 4.8 home. I have the shield and updates services running but I disabled the ashDisp.exe tray icon from starting with Windows.

I’m assuming the standard protection resident scanner is still running despite the tray icon not being there?

Why would you want to do that ?

This is the interface to the avast settings, context menu, on-access scanner settings, etc. you should leave it on. The standard protection will run but that interface is used/required in other things, I simply can’t fathom why you would disable the avast icon and interface.

Because I don’t want my system tray littered with un-necessary icons that so many applications add.

I did find the system tray executable and launched it. Determined that it uses minimal memory resources and does provide access to the resident scanning options so I’ve re-enabled it to startup with Windows.

If you want to reduce clutter the easiest option is to have the icons hidden and use the < (see images) to show them when needed.

Thanks David, I am aware of that feature. Its not just the “eye clutter” but also the resource utilization of unnecessary startup applications.

Just to test the resources used by avast, I went back and installed all the resident shields. I’m amazed by how little resources all these shields use. I was also happy to see that there doesn’t appear to be any performance degredation by enabling all the shields.

That said, all shields are now running and everything seems to be working great.

No problem, glad I could help.
