Standard Shield default configurations

Hello,

I have just started with avast! 4 Home Edition, and have a question about the default configurations for the Standard Shield:

Both Normal and High sensitivity configurations seem to have the “Scan files on open” option in the Scanner (Advanced) tab selected, but there are no extensions listed in the “Scan files with these extensions” box. What is the effect of this, and is it the recommended set-up?

From the help files, it appears that this will not actually check files on open, except those enabled in the Scanner (Basic) tab.

By the way, I am impressed with the forum which looks like a great resource for technical advice - missing from most of the competing products.

Thanks for your help!

I recommend:

Custom sensitivity with

Scan files on open:
WS?,VBS,VBE,JS,JSE,HTA,WSF,WSH,SHS,SHB,HTM*,PIF,EXE,PIF,COM,SCR

Scan created/modified files:
ACE,ARC,ARJ,BZIP2,CAB,COM,ECE,EXE,GZ,GZIP,LHarc,MIME,PST,RAR,TAR,WinExec,ZIP,ZOO

or, if you have enough system resources (memory, etc.), you can set the sensitivity to High. If you let that line empty, only the default list of extensions will be scanned.

Hehe, wellcome to the paradise ;D

Will an 800 Celeron with 384MB Ram be able to handle Avast (home) with all of the scan settings set to high.

I looking to keep the doors shut tight without slowing down the system.

Thanks

I think the best you can do is try
Maybe you will only have trouble if you stress too much your system (many applications). The Custom sensitivity could be ‘smart’ (non scanning un-necessary files) but, on contrary, requires attention and technical knowleage of the user.
Even at High security, avast works better - for me - than other antivirus. Again, why don’t you try? 8)

i think it’s better to stick to the customise config technical advised

Technical - thanks, I’ll try your suggestion.
