Standardized Virus Names

First, I apologize if this has been previously addressed. I didn’t find anything in my search…

I use Symantec Corporate Edition on my work PC, and avast on my home PC. Each day, I try to compare avast! and Symantec to see what new threats have been addressed. Except for some very basic, well-known threats, I have the hardest time trying to reconcile the naming conventions of Symantec and avast!

Is there a list somewhere that translates avast threat names into Symantec/NAV/KAV so I can tell whether a threat has yet to be addressed?

Thanks.

There is no list. AV Companies do not agree on names, ALWIL is no exception.

Although there isn’t a list available, there are companies out there that provides alias for virus names.

Yes listen to software guy! you use NAVCE so just look at their descriptions and you will see a list of aliases

You can use Virus Bulletin’s Vgrep (actually done and maintained by Dmitry Gryaznov from NAI) - but of course, as it is updated only sometimes, it does not cover the latest threads…

This might help.

As has been mentioned, no one seems to agree on common names across the many different AV companies out their. Most however do have the names of the aliases (what other companies are calling them).

What I find more useful is a search using Google, this is able to search on that name and should find it even if it is an alias with another AV company. This is much quicker than searching each and every AV companies database for the name and then searching for it as an alias (if not found).

My first port of call for any question no matter what is Google, if it can’t be found their it’s pretty obscure and you may have to change the search string.
