Start up automatic Access denied

When I try to switch On-Access start-up from Manual to automatic I get an Access Denied message.

After I start manualy the red ball remains on the Icon

That would be in computer management XP

I have hit repair & restarted several times.

Any ideas?

I’ve loaded Avast in several computers and never had a problem before.

I have no idea what I’m doing when a problem arises so please be explicit.

Thanks

Q: There´s a red circle on avast! a-ball icon in system tray and when I click on it, the error message appears saying “the AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error”. How to fix this?

A: First, use Windows Update to be sure that all Windows components (including “RPC”) is up to date. Then restart your computer and check if the problem persists. If it persists, follow these instructions:

Right-click the icon MY COMPUTER and select MANAGE.
In left column unroll SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS.
Click on SERVICES.
In the right column, look at the state of service avast! Antivirus.
If the service isn’t set to start automatically, set it that way (right-click it and select PROPERTIES and the STARTUP TYPE set to AUTOMATIC). Restart the computer after making the change.
If it was already set to “Automatic”, check the status of the service. If it not “Started”, try to start it (right-click it and select START).
If the service cannot be started, your avast! installation might be corrupted. Try repairing the avast! installation: click START → CONTROL PANEL → ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS → avast! Antivirus → CHANGE/REMOVE and select REPAIR.
This solution works on Windows NT, 2000, XP and 2003 only.

What exactly are you trying to change? (and how)

Is there any other antivirus installed in this machine? Was there in the past?

Yes this machine previously had clamware

I suppose you’ve uninstalled it… I’m asking because RPC errors are due to a second antivirus (or remains of it) present.

clamwin it was.

yes I uninstalled it. Would I be better off to reinstall clamwin?

First, answer Igor’s questions…

I thought I did.
I’m not sure what he is asking for if his question is not answered yet. Please elaborate.

Update - For whatever reason Avast is now running fine. Did somebody sneek in my computer and change something while I was changing clothes? ;D

Where? How?

How are you “starting manually”? What are you doing?
Are you changing the services startup options? Why?

I really don’t know how much more thorough answer I can give. I don’t see anything in your questions that is not cover in the above from my earlier post and instructions copied from the FAQ section. I followed the instructions to the letter - several times. Apparently it worked the last time
I do not understand what you are asking.

To change the services status you need to temporarily disable the avast self defense module:

  1. Right click the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.
  2. Programs settings > Troubleshooting (tab)
  3. Disable self defense module

Anyway I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Thanks for the help

Sorry. Glad everything is right now.

This should be with the FAQ that I copied and pasted. That might have been my problem all along. If that piece of info had been included in the link Either it would have worked or I would have had another diagnostic step out of the way.
Thanks again

Hope they follow your suggestion
