So after several failed attempts to scan and beating my head against the wall, I uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. I’ve been looking around and I have no idea where to go from here. >:( I found the “Logs to assist in cleaning malware” thread and followed the directions. Here are my logs.
MBAM was the trial. In my googling, somebody at some had said to enable the trial(not on the Avast thread). Anyway, I uninstalled it.
So in this order, I:
Disconnected from the internet.
Uninstalled Avast.
Ran the utility.
Accepted safe mode.
Rebooted.
Reinstalled Avast.
Upon installation, Avast ran and completed the quick scan and opened the “Select your level of protection” window and is now frozen. I cannot click on anything in the window as I just get a “bwong” Windows 8 sound. I cannot get rid of the window…the only way is to restart. My computer is not frozen but I can’t click on anything Avast. Even when I get the notification that “there are important updates to install to some of your software”, I click on it it, the window comes up, and is frozen. Nothing can be updated. ???
OK go to control panel > programmes and features
Select Avast
Select Change
Select Continue
Remove the tick from Secure virtual machines
Click continue and allow Avast to do its thing
Reboot on completion
2.Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. NoteThe Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.
3.Click the Services tab.
4.Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
After I was able to do a quick scan, I went ahead and scheduled a boot time scan so my apologies for the delayed response(found 34 threats btw). The system was running fine with everything disable so I went through all of the services until I found the conflict. As it turns out, a program called Synergy was causing the issue. I was able to run everything as normal with all services and startup items until I enabled the Synergy service(netwrok based keyboard mouse sharing software). I’m assuming that the last update from them was the problem so I’m going to contact them for feedback. I appreciate your direction in figuring this out as it was really getting on my nerves. You da man!!! 8)
For anyone else out there running Synergy with Avast Free, you may want to try and run a scan and see if it works for you. If not, try disabling the service. I’m running Synergy version 1.6.2
