StartPage Search Engine

Anybody use StartPage as a search engine? I friend recommended it because it’s supposed to be a more secure way to search, which she likes. (I’m assuming that the StartPage trojan horse virus stuff I’ve read about is not related to this but to your browser’s home (start) page?)

Thanks, all!

Pam

The only search engine that does not record your IP address.
Who really cares that they record your IP address. It isn't a state secret. By limiting their searches to only using search engines that do not record your IP address, you loose out on the ability to gather the most amount of data when you do a search. I personally like AllMyFaves :)

Oh, is that all the difference? I never give it much thought…but she sure does.

Thanks!

Maybe she is isn’t as well protected as you with Windows XP Pro v2002 (SP3); Avast! 4.8.1335; Malwarebytes 1.42; SUPERAntiSpyware 4.26.1000

By the way the current avast! is 4.8.1368

Looking forward to avast! V5 general release.

I would update your PROFILE as I am sure you would not want spammers and scammers harvesting your Hotmail address from your PROFILE in Account Related Settings to Hide email address from public?

The biggest advantage is to those who are still on dial-up since the page loads quickly. It solves the problem of going to a homepage with lots of graphics and animations. No pop ups either.

Hi it is a Dutch page - http://startpage.com/eng/protect-privacy.html

Another startpage without the Google privacy hick-ups is scroogle:
http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm
or the https version in Google Chrome: Chrome — wrench > Options > Default search Manage > Add. Paste the URL shown for Opera,
or better yet, use https://ssl.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/nbbwssl.cgi?Gw=%s (Chrome phones home a lot)

@ polonus

I tried Scroogle as my my home page but I don’t like it as I miss the Image search.

You’re right, she’s probably not. I know she just updated Norton (tried to get her to switch to avast), but other than that…

Thanks for the e-mail suggestion. I have several different e-mail addresses and use that one for anything that might produce spam (and I do get some there), but I did go in and make that change to hide it from public view.

(I have that one, a business one for my clients, one for friends and family, one I have on my website, and so on… )
