I recently had some though times with my friend Avast … but it’s all solved now. Because of the trouble all the programs avast secures/controls/however-it-does-it’s-thing fail, mostly my IM’s (Skype: SkypePM some instruction trying to read from memory location 0x00000…0; MSN Live: no functionality at all; Yahoo: it starts but you can’t open chat windows/menus) and IE (javascript nor flash work). Also Microsoft Paint doesn’t open and that’s all I found. Reinstalling does not work, neither does turning off avast.
I’ve also tried out the option “Start avast after other system services at startup”, without result. I’ve looked all over the program to check which programs avast plugged something into but there isn’t.
Just a little suggestion, add some more options and managability to the program (maybe this comes with the Professional Edition, if so: sorry for using freeware only :)). If anybody could help me by telling which files to remove or how to fix those corrupt plug-ins I’d be more then happy.
I posted another topic too which you could read for more background information about the trouble with avast.
Last but not least is there anybody who knows how avast works in function of communicating/checking/controlling other programs (like IM’s) that could help me alot to figure out a way to fix my problems
For me on Windows XP Pro SP3 and the latest version of avast Home I have no problems at all with:
Skype
Windows Live Messenger (not sure if that is the same as MSN Live)
Yahoo IM
IE7
MS Paint
I am hearing no concerns from the folks I support on avast about issues with these products.
There is nothing to configure relative to these functions in the Home or the Pro edition of avast.
You may want to give some thought to whether you have completely removed all traces of a previous anti-virus product you had used or think about any other communication software (like an internet accelerator, filtering products etc) that you might have installed.
Avast is the only AV I’ve ever used; But it’s not avast! It’s what I did with avast! :S I (think) turned off the PC by unplugging because the system froze while avast was updating; and then at the next reboot it didn’t want to start up so I again (stupidly) turned off the power, I tought everything was OK but all programs that avast secures didn’t work anymore. SO successfully uninstalled avast! but when I tried to reinstall it it removed a part of the installation because I didn’t restart yet (an I AM aware I just broke 2 very important rules on how to treat a PC in 1 post …) and I had ‘shrapnel’ of avast all over my PC… Now because of the help of this forum I got avast running again but the affected programs still won’t work.
It might be a total PITA, but perhaps it would help to use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall and clean all the programs thus affected, while leaving Avast in place if it’s working correctly, then re-install each program.
The Revo program searches out and deletes ssome leftover files and reg entries that standard uninstallers sometimes miss. Caution is recommended if aggressively cleaning the registry, to only delete the bolded items, in some cases the “tree” needs to be expanded to see these.
Also important to check C:\documents and settings\Justintimebugger\loacal settings\application data (normally hidden) and remove relevant entries. Revo can sometimes miss some of these.
You mentioned in your other post something about Avast (2) when fixing up that problem. Did uninstalling Avast from its other location fix that? edit disregard, I think that applied to someone else.

Are you talking about manually removing things using regedit?
I’ve checked Application Data before, but I can’t find anything not directly related to the programs
Edit: After using the full scan of Revo Uninstaller the programs still don’t work; quite a dissapointment …
P.I.T.A = pain in the arse.
As you’ll have seen by now, Revo uninstall opens an explorer-like regedit window. (Or a regedit-like explorer window). The caution is addressed to the content of that window.
Did you actually fully uninstall, reboot, then reinstall each program in turn using Revo uninstaller?
I have tried several times to download AVAST Professional Edition that i paid for last nite. I did uninstall AVAST Free Edition and it is no longer in my computer. But, i keep getting the Setup Self Extract Error 1006 like i see so many others have. I have WindowsFix and still i have this Setup issue…Can you help please?
Thanks very much.
Where are you downloading from?
Are you saving the setup file to your computer or directly executing it?
Do you have any other security program that could interfere with avast installation?
