startup problem after installation

hey there,

two days ago I purchased avast internet security and installed it. when it asked for a restart I did so and now when windows (I am using windows 7) starts up, the windows interface doesnt launch properly. only one explorer window pops up and I have to start the task manager and create a task (explorer.exe) by hand to get the windows gui.

any ideas what is causing this? I was using the free avast version with no problems before.

cheers,
ello

Did you a clean install of Internet Security? Or have you upgraded over your Free Edition?

DJBone

i have installed it over my free version

Then try a clean install:
1 Download latest stable version of avast: http://www.avast.com/download-software
2 Uninstall avast.
3 http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (note the Windows Safe Mode detail).
4 Run aswclear several times, for each version / edition of avast ever installed or updated to in your system.
5 Install avast and reboot after the installation finishes.
6 Let avast update itself (do not force it).
7 Report back whichever the result.

DJBone

okay I’ve seen that before, that’s a case where you’re gonna have to go into safe mode, uninstall Avast, reboot, re-install, reboot, you’re done.

Don’t know why this happens off and on, either explorer breaks or you can’t login at all. I’ve seen that with Comodo too.

This time if you got a license, install AIS directly

thank you both. i’ll try that. hope it works

hi, now i did the thing you mentioned but the problem remains. is this any windows setting that could have been set accidentally?

Do you have any other security related software installed? Or was something installed before?

DJBone

i am using spybot search and destroy, too

btw, it seemed that my computer has been infected by something, because somehow my website was infected with a malware which put the following into every html file:

div.pofasdfhg{z-index:-1;position:absolute;left:0;top:0;opacity:0.0;filter:alpha(opacity=0);-moz-opacity:0;}

thats mostly the reason why i bought the full avast version.

could it be that a virus hides itself so avast cannot find it?

Could you please deinstall Spybot, restart your computer and post the result?

DJBone

that didnt change anything… what could it be. i found another thread on the web where someone had the same problem. but other than here he found a virus and removing it solved everything

Did you ran a Boot Time Scan with avast?

DJBone

yes, i did this last night.

And was anything found (just for clarification)?

DJBone

no… thats the problem. my provider told me that it could be my pc is infected. but what am i supposed to do if nothing is found?

i just had a look at the window event messages and found some errors:

could any of those be related?

Then you maybe could try avast! Antirootkit: http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.exe
Download, execute and run a Quick-Scan. This could take several minutes. Don’t forget to save the Logfile after scanning.

DJBone

thank you. i’ll try that right now…

Ok. Please report back the result.

DJBone

oh… it just found something File: C:\Users\Ello\AppData\Local\TempDIR\BetterInstaller.exe infected win32 … the rest is not visible within the aswMBR window

i guess i need to have some patience and wait for it to finish. i guess the complete message is saved in the logfile later?

edit: if i scan this file with avast internet security nothing is found…

Yes, it is.
