Startup Puzzle

I’m running XP with Avast Home 4.8 and a Comodo firewall.
When I start avast the monitor’s screen goes blank and after a second
the generic - default - skin pops up, no matter how many times or which skin I have
selected. Not a clue as to why this happens but any help will be appreciated.

Regards to all…

Does your computer reach the desktop on booting. If it does try a repair of avast ie go to start add remove programes click on Avast and try repair! If it does not reach desktop can you start the computer in Safe Mode (Hitting F8 on booting ! Have you had another antivirus on the computer in the past? as will cause a conflict?

Did you have any other antivirus before avast?
How did you uninstall it?
If you uninstall Comodo for a while, will avast behave correctly?

Thanks sooooo much for the quick replies…

  1. I have Avril anti-virus installed-but only use it to scan certain files, and that is
the only time I have it opperating.
  2. Tried the “repair” in the control panel, and it updated, but the problem still exists.
3.I had Avast installed previously, but the icons never showed in the toolbar, now it does.
4.The computer boots normally, and the problem only exists when I click on the
start Avast anti-virus button from the tray icon.

Is there a typo here? Do you mean Avira?

Yes it is a typo, and the only trouble I’m having is the Avast.
Everything boots normally.
It is when I click on the Avast icon the screen goes blank-the resolution on my monitor changes-then the screen goes blank-the resolution of the monitor return to normal, and the default skin is on the screen.

You will need to completely uninstall Avira before avast will work correctly.

After you use Add/Remove, you should use Avira Antivir RegistryCleaner as well as the appropiate “Uninstallation Package”, both of which can be found at: http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html
