Status: avast! against zonealarm - 0:2

Sorry,
please no discusions about the sense of using personal firewalls at this topic!

Since avast free antivirus 2014.9.0.2011 avast is not able to run with zonealarm on WinXP SP3 x32.
The actual version 9.0.2013 also crashed with BSOD if ZA is runing.

Can avast please confirm that the free AV will no more runing together with ZA under XP

Is this the way avast will sell the internet and premium products?

Since avast premier (as well as AIS) come with a firewall, there is no need to have ZA also installed.

The best firewall is a hardware firewall since it stops possible intruders before they reach your system.
A software firewall is only able to stop intruders while they are already on your system.

It is really hard (if not impossible) to make such a advanced software like avast compatible with all other software/hardware and configurations.

Hi Eddy,

Avast and ZoneAlarm have had there incompatibilities before and like before I guess they’ll be worked out at some period, avast doesn’t intentionally try to make their products not work with other software.

There are a several other free and paid firewalls that have no issues with avast and have probably had better mutual compatibility over the years.

Hi Craig,

I’m sure avast have noticed some of the complaints, it’s fairly recent yet though and it’s working for some and not others so I guess the problem would still need to be found and decided who needs to change or fix what as it might not be an avast issue :-\

Thanks Eddy and Craigb for honest straight answers. Like ur car Craigb too! I’ve been monitoring this forum for this topic as I can’t move up to versions .2011 or .2013 on my XP3 with ZA either. So, not wanting to give up on Avast or ZA, I changed Avast program updating to manual to stay on .2008 and still get auto updates of the virus defs and wait for a future fix (I hope).

One of the most common ZA issues related to blocking avast processes, even though the avast processes were allowed in the ZA program control. Avast Program updates result in changed processes, some firewalls block the changed processes rather than seek permission for it.

This ZA digital amnesia (going back years) was a problem in blocking avastSvc.exe it was also blocking the web shield, so effectively you weren’t able to connect to the internet. Disabling the web shield would effectively resolve this issue with ZA, but you lost a major part of your avast protection.

The way to cure this digital amnesia was to delete any avast processes in the ZA program control, which forced ZA to ask permission the next time you connected to the internet with the web shield enabled.
