Status: Unsecured

Am trying to fix Status: Unsecured. Urgent: avast! service stopped "The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting to your system.

Tried to restart program, wouldn’t start, error message that program can not restart. Tried rebooting twice. Tried Repair in Programs and Features in Control Panel (Repair not an option, change is) Selected Change, first msg: Change updated successfully, then 2nd msg: The uninstall was not completed successfully and says to reinstall, but do not have program to reinstall. Rebooted again, twice. It’s even dropped my subscription which is not due for renewal for 2013, and will not let me paste in the license.avastlic file.

Please help! Thanks

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
  7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

I have the same problem. Followed the instructions using the “safe mode”, but continue to have the problem. Any additional suggestion is appreciated.

Reinstalled again…seemed to be fine. 5 minutes later, “Progam Error…AvastSvc.exe has gnerated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.” Suggestions? Thanks.

Is there any other antivirus installed? In the past?
Any other security program now and before that could be interfering?
Is your computer clean? Did you scan it with which program?

Edit: Reply #49 is the important one.

Thank you. Reviewed the post. Decided to try to uninstall and reinstall the Pro trial version as I was unable to find the older version download. The Pro install generated the same error messages.

You have to wait for the next VPS update…!!!

Is there a way to get on an email list to know when the next release is available? Thanks.

You don’t need a list for this.
The next VPS update will be soon. I guess today. (CET)

Thanks for the help. I’ll check back later and reinstall after the update.

You’re welcome…!

The latest VPS 110806-1 has been released and this by all accounts corrects the problem.

Worked for me. Thanks for the most responsive support I have ever received from the technology industry!
