stay-in-memory problem with AntiTheft

Hello,

I am using the most recent version on my HTC DesireZ (aka G2, aka Vision) in rooted mode. My mobile is running the most recent Android version 4.2.2, as a custom ROM of course. So far Antitheft installs correct und runs fine after install.
The main problem has to do with the amount of memory my phone has. The HTC DesireZ only has 386 MB free RAM after boot and with Android 4.2.2 as system RAM is rare. But thanks to the quite well working memory mechanism this is a minor problem when working with that phone.
But the effect is that app, that are not used for some time, are kicked out of memory quite soon. And obviously Antitheft is on that target list, too, while it should not be there.

So the problem shows up after some time working with the phone and therefore Antitheft is not reachable any more via WEB account. The solution is rebooting the phone or launching AT manually. But both options are no solution in case of the theft, of course.

So you should make sure that a minimal version of Antitheft is kepted in memory persistent even in low memory configurations! Or is there another solution here for this problem?

Hello,

we are using the ressources of our customers very carefully. Unfortunately we can’t lower our memory usage.

But I still have some hints for you:

  • in case of emergency use SMS commands to operate anti-theft. they are most reliable and work even without internet connection
  • since you are using android 4.2.2 your system already has a network meter (in your phone’s settings). so you can deactivate ours (in Mobile Security), save ressources and still have your used data traffic counted.

Hi Werner,

Don’t get me wrong - there is enough memory for Antitheft and my apps on my device. Moreover I deinstalled Mobile Security cause I only need Antitheft. So no problem here.

But in low memory conditions, that might appear also on other devices, it is possible for Android 4.2.2 to unload Antitheft from memory and therefore disable its protection - including SMS. Normal user will not notice this problem unless his device is stolen and he can’t contact his Antitheft. The problem with SMS in common for me is, in case a SMS is not properly handled by Antitheft, I would warn a thief and more problematic I would give away my pin code. So Web remote access is the way to go! But it should be stable and in this point it isn’t.
btw, Antitheft already save my mobile one time and brought back my stolen DesireZ. So, it’s a fine app!

So I would like you, as the developer, to build in a simple function to prevent any memory unload for the Antitheft process (and system 4.2.x). I know this is possible easily - most launchers have this function.

Hi,

actually the Anti-Theft should be started automatically by the system upon request from the account. If that is not the case then something might be wrong with your custom ROM.

In fact it turned out that something like that was the reason here. With the most uptodate build my 4.2.2 ROM performs well with AT kept in memory.

But one question - is SYNC (google sync) enable nessasary for AT to be contacted via IP?

i dont think so but cannot guarantee
