Still Can't Seem to Update Virus Definitions

Hello,

I’m using Vista Home 64 Bit, and can’t seem to update my virus definitions. Keeps saying it can’t connect to the server. The error code it says: “Last encountered error: Cannot connect to a720sl.avast.com(74.86.245.122:80)”

Windows Update says everything’s up to date.

I did a clean uninstall with Avast’s utility and then reinstalled the latest version.

I also changed the proxy to direct connection for updates and that didn’t seem to work either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You guys know anyway to get it to start downloading Virus updates automatically again? Seemed to work just fine a few days ago?

I Don’t know what stopped it. Maybe one of the other forum members can help.

You could try to repair avast

How to do an Avast Repair:
XP Users:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

Vista & Win7 Users:

  • Control Panel
  • Programs & Features
  • Uninstall a Program > Select Avast Antivirus
  • Click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair
  • Click Next and follow.
  • Reboot.

If this fails to fix your problem, check your firewall:

  • Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access?
  • If it does, delete the entry for it and reconnect to the Internet. This should force the firewall to ask permission again.

If this fails to fix the problem, uninstall Avast and do a clean install using the Avast Uninstaller tool. https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=730&nav=0,2, then reboot.
