Stolen Toshiba Laptop

Hi all, first time here so not sure if this is the right forum for this. Anyways my Toshiba laptop got stolen, I have reported to the police and was made to understand that it is not a priority for them. It has built in wi/fi and wi-max and avast installed; is there a way to track using IP or serial #?. And how do I do this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I don’t believe so, unless you had some form of tracking software already installed.

The IP address is worthless unless it can be communicated to you from the stolen laptop, so that you can try to track that IP address and location.

Now I believe that there was something similar asked some time ago, but I don’t know if this was resolved or not. As when the laptop is on-line, if avast was still installed it would be connecting to avast for updates. But I don’t know if there is any information in that update connection that could track your laptop.

You don’t say if this is avast free or Pro/AIS/Premier ?
The latter of these would have a license number which may be validated during updates, but how helpful that might be is not certain (certainly for me an avast user).

To protect notebooks there is a free service called Prey (http://preyproject.com/)

Good to know for your next laptop but, unless if not already installed.

That lesson is usually learned the hard way. Sorry.

I can guarantee you that they answer is NO!. We had a whole business completely cleared out, with avast! Endpoint installed, and I was in Prague at avast! HQ and asked the question to avast! Engineers if we could track a license number and record the IP address from which it was updating. It is a possible scenario, but Avast Software is not setup to provide that type of service or information.
