There is a problem with your installation, try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
What is your OS ?
What version of avast do you have, the latest is 4.8.1201 ?
Why is it that you want to stop avast anyway ?
Hey, thanks for helping me out.
Im running Win XP SP2, Avast! Home edition 4.8.1169.
I am trying to stop avast because it prevents me to run a file which it detects as a trojan, but i know it’s just a poorly written program.
I have tried to repair it, without any luck, I can’t get to the controlpanel where I turn the different ash… prosessors on/off.
Any idea?
EDIT: I have updated to 4.8.1201, which didn’t make any difference.
To know if a file is a false positive, please submit it to VirusTotal and let us know the result. If it is indeed a false positive, send it in a password protected zip to virus@avast.com
Please, mention in the body of the message why you think it is a false positive and the password used. Thanks.
Other possibility is JOTTI. VirusTotal and Jotti both have file size limit of 10Mb.
As a workaround, you can add these files to the Standard Shield provider (on-access scanning) exclusion list.
Left click the ‘a’ blue icon, click on the provider icon at left and then Customize. Go to Advanced tab and click on Add button…
You can use wildcards like * and ?. But be careful, you should ‘exclude’ that many files that let your system in danger.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
Thanks for your help. I will send it to them.
How can I do that when the icon is not visible in the system tray? That is actually my main question, how do I access this menu, when there are no avast icons in the system tray?
Yes, I have done that, but it didn’t do any difference.
Yes, I have done that, but it didn't do any difference.
What about uninstalling avast then reinstall? Did you try it?
rassel was right.
uninstall it and reinstall it with new avast program version
or use avast uninstall utility
Yes, I have thought of it, but isn’t it very strange that avast doesn’t have a single way to turn it off, once you have turned the icons off?
Why would you want to turn the icons of, as that is the interface to on-access protection and the program settings ?
Your initial post doesn’t sound like you did remove the icons, because the ashDisp.exe as you say didn’t do anything when you run it from Program Files (I hope that means, the avast4 folder). So did ‘you’ actually remove the avast icons ?
If not then there is something wrong with your installation.
Since you tried the repair that didn’t resolve the problem, I would suggest a clean reinstall.
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.
Now uninstall (using add remove programs), reboot, run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot, install the latest version, reboot.
No, I won’t call it strange, in fact I call it protection. If there is a way to disable the antivirus, viruses will do it…
