The on-access protection clearly slows down loading of web pages etc. Not sure it’s worth running these modules, given the performance hit, the various other protection methods available, and the unlikelihood of any damage from shutting them down. I’d appreciate any comments on this…
It’s a new Vista PC, had the same web page slowdowns on the old one (not sure it’s very noticeable until you disable on-access and see the difference). No other AV installed. ZoneAlarm firewall.
I have no Vista experience, but as you say it was the same previously, so I don’t think it is a Vista specific issue.
You shouldn’t stop on-access protection if all you are experiencing is browsing issues, terminate the Web Shield and leave the rest enabled.
So what about your new Vista PC specs, with Vista you need a reasonable system just to play with vista aero, etc. whilst that shouldn’t have any effect on the page downloads you imply that there are other issues.

I also can’t see where you get the unlikelihood of any damage from shutting them down from. Prevention is much better than cure, not only is it easier to deal with before an infection gets established. The potential for damage I feel is great and I believe this same belief was what prompted RejZoR’s comment.
How do you connect to the internet ?
Does your ISP require you to use a proxy ?
It may be worth trying another firewall, the ZA free has become bloated since version 7 (assuming you use ZA Free ?) Comodo seems common amongst forums members.
No actual measurement, but lots of times when web pages are taking a long time to load, I shut down the web shield, then they’ll finish loading instantly.
