The problem with that argument is that it ignores the success of avast! before it began this aggressive advertising. Its user base grew dynamically over many years as a result of its performance, referrals, and the popularity of its free offerings, These frequent popup ads are a relatively new innovation for avast!.
A reread of the Blog post from Vince Steckler, CEO which he penned shortly after joining avast in 2009 should give a good picture of how things used to be:

Excerpts (emphases added):
“Here at Avast we actually believe that computer users deserve very good free protection that
does not annoy them. So, we freely distribute our Home version. From the reviews, you can
see that it is a very, very good product. Its capabilities are not crippled. It does not
find “fictitious” problems to try and get you to upgrade to the paid product. And, it does
not constantly annoy you asking for you to upgrade.”
“Eda and Pavel grew the company from basically nothing to one that supports 80 million consumers
with no marketing or sales. Our users have done the marketing and sales for us - they have told
their friends and colleagues; they have posted glowing reviews; they have told us what they like
and dislike.”
“Eda and Pavel have always been focused on developing a great product and supporting the
community of users. They believed that by doing those two things the company would succeed.
And it did. I am honored to be able to continue that focus.”
Apparently, it’s no longer good enough …
Hmmm… Lowering value of AV-TEST certification for sure.
You seen to have learned little from our past discussions of that Kaspersky post. You continue to misrepresent what it’s saying. To repeat what I have said before when you have tried to disparage the AV-Test results by posting a link to that blog:
What Kaspersky claims is of limited or no use when evaluating various products is the awarding of the “AV-Test Certified” designation. That is now given to almost every product tested, regardless of test scores. Kaspersky does not say that the test results cannot be trusted. On the contrary.
“With AV-TEST’s new certification standards, the onus is on the user to carefully investigate
the actual results of each individual test - they may find that a product that blocked 99.9%
of attacks has the same “certification” as a product that only blocked 55%.”
“So, who can we trust to tell us the truth? Independent testers, of course. And that includes AV-TEST.”
"So, who can we trust to tell us the truth? Independent testers, of course. And that includes AV-TEST."Bull there aren't any "Independent testers and that includes AV-TEST. You trust your own computer and what's protecting it. For me that's avast! Free. I don't need some testing lab to tell me if my AV is doing it's job. When it's not, it doesn't take long to become obvious.
@waking,
We’ve put up with your propaganda way too long.
If you don’t like the product, there is a simple solution. Move On!
I have the Internet Security version and the ads I get are the VPN software and occassional GrimeFighter pop-ups.
What I don’t understand is the push to use Chrome, and product from a company in bed with the NSA, got it funding from the governement, scans your email and released a “patch” for Chrome that allows them to turn on your camera & mic without your agreeing to or knowing of it. Every time I get and update it pushes it - PLEASE STOP! This is about security & privacy, with Google you have neither.
What I don't understand is the push to use Chrome, and product from a company in bed with the NSAFor your information, all companies are required to pass along information when served with the proper papers. That includes MS Yahoo Google etc including your ISP. Chrome happens to be a fast and secure browser. You can always select not to install chrome and choose your own browser.
Today again a vps update, no sound, no version number and a add for avast’s vpn
If this continues, avast is loosing another paid customer.
Eddy,
Are you using a 32 or 64 bit system ???
I’ve noticed no sound on my 64 bit Win 8.1.1 system and, sound and no ads on the 32 bit Windows 8.1.1 system
32 bits
