Hope I can explain this. I just upgraded to the latest program vs 6.0.1203, and now have the following strangeness: In the User Interface, all the real-time sheilds are shown as “Running” and in the Summary, it says my system is fully secured. When I hover the mouse over the tray icon, it also says my system is fully secured. However, when I right click on the tray icon and look at the avast!shields control, the top item i.e. “All shields are on” remains grayed out, no matter what I’ve done to try to get it to reflect the (supposedly) condition that it shows in the Interface… i.e. that yes indeed, all the shields are on. I’ve tried disabling then re-enabling them, rebooting a few times. Tech support on the phone said don’t worry about it, since the shields show as Running in the interfaces, but it’s driving me nuts! Any help? Thanks!
Try a repair by double clicking on avast in add remove programs and scroll down to repair and run it then reboot.
Craig, just tried it, didn’t fix the issue unfortunately. Before that, I had also uninstalled and re-installed, which hadn’t worked either.
I suppose it’s not a major problem, as long as what it shows in the Interface - that all shields really are on, as opposed to they’re not being on, as it shows in the icon menu info.
That has always been greyed out for me. Only time it has not been greyed out is when you actually disable one of the shields.
I know which screen you mean now, the second little popup screen after you hover over avast shield control, its supposed to be like that ( dont worrie )
Gargamel and Craig – thank you both very much! As long as I know it’s normal now, I am happy again
Your welcome.
@nighting85,
Just for completeness, the “enable all” is actually not a “status” (of all shields being active), but an “action”.
When you have certain shields inactive (“off”), you will see that “enable all” will not be grayed out. Clicking on it will enable any and all shields that were inactive at that moment.
So, when all shields are already active (“on”), no action can be applied, hence normally it is grayed out.
ady4um, I appreciate this info. I always like to understand the reasons for what might appear to me as strange at first. Thank you!
any chance you could post a picture of how your avast looks like when it is like that would be helpful.
a clean installation from scratch I would recommend.
download the latest avast from avast.com.
uninstall the avast you using with the uninstall tool.
reboot your system
clean any left over files and registry keys from avast with cclener.
install the new avast you downloaded.
registry the program.

good luck let us know on the progress.
I think you need to go back and read the thread properly, there’s nothing wrong with the OP’s system or avast.
true, but sounds like it could be something with avast. you suggested a clean installation of avast as well. could also be something else of course.
Craig and Mikaelrask - Thank you for the replies. Apparently the behaviour I’d questioned is in fact totally normal. If you take a look at the reply by ady4um, it explains the reason that the icon items act as they do… I apparently just never noticed it before.
