Sometimes I see character like this: used in junk mail addresses and inside website txt, what is this character, and how does it get there? If you look at the source of the webpage, you find it too:
Who will shine a light on this? Using another browser than FF 3Beta5 I get this only the square is empty, like □, but two times larger.

The ? character is often used because you don’t have the font required to display it. For example, it is most often seen here in the forums when someone posts using the Chinese Simplified font, the same could be true in other sites. Copy and paste string of ??s into the likes of AltaVista babel fish translator (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) and select Chinese Simplified to English and see if that is what it is.
DavidR is right, it’s a character windows doesn’t recognize, at least not in the language/font installed. I had one a while back where the combofix log showed a folder C:\Do, on the victim’s computer, windows showed D with a square .
