Strange "error" in Avast 4.6

Hi!

I have Avast! 4.6 Home edition. Each time I scan my computer, I get the following message: http://img430.imageshack.us/my.php?image=avast9fx.png How can I fix the problem? What does this message mean?

(Translation):
“Unknown error. Scan ended up in error. Error: 5 = access denied”

Yeah, I know, it was crappy translation, but at least I tried

Well, “access denied” means you don’t have permissions to browse some directory or read some file. What and how exactly did you scan?

Avast usually informs after the scan that it could not scan directory C:\Program Files\Spybot\Includes (or something like that). I guess it’s referring to this ???

Do you use the resident TeaTimer from Spybot?

Do you use the resident TeaTimer from Spybot?

Yes

So the resident TeaTimer from Spybot will be using that files.
When avast! tryes to scan, that’s the result: access denied.

You can try to scan at boot time (just schedule it)

I recently made new scan. When I tried to read log file with notepad, notepad consumes 236 128 kt memory :o !!! http://img454.imageshack.us/my.php?image=avastreport5hk.png And if I try to maximize notepad’s window, notepad freezes! What the hell is this??

Maybe nothing… just the size of the log file? How many bytes does it have?

Hi,
My system went crazy tonight after I opened and AVI file. I read about Windows having problems with this kind of file. I deleted the offending file and rebooted but my CPU was running at 100% with nothing open and the harddrive was spinning wildly ( like the sound it makes for about 3 seconds at boot up) and wouldn’t shut down. Then it shut down and 5 minutes later started spinning again. So I did an Avast scan and got the same error message:
“Unknown Error. Error 5 = Access is denied”.
I was scanning the C drive as usual. Never got this message before and have not installed anything new since the last scan so I thought it was somehow connected to the problem I was having before I scanned with Avast but maybe it’s no problem??? Hope so. Any help would be appreciated.

first suggestion - try a system restore to previous day.
if that fails try opening taskmanager and finding where the problem is (what using all the CPU)
let us know what you find
if all else fails try doing an update/overwrite with your installation cd

I don’t know if that file still exists in my hard drive. In which directory it should be? C:\Program Files\Avast4\DATA\report maybe??

The reports are on that folder by default. Did you change the default folder? (see your Report settings).
But, if the file does not exist anymore, maybe we can’t forget all this about and let the bill for gremlins ;D

I am assuming this was in response to my message. I kind of barged into this message board after running a search for my problem and finding this topic.
I honestly don’t remember how I got out of the problem. It was a few days ago. Seems like one problem gets solved and another one is waiting and I just can’t remember which was what now. The harddrive just stopped spinning.
But I was wondering about the update/overwrite thing you mentioned. I have Restore Disks that came with the computer (Emachines). Can I do the update/overwrite without completely re-formatting the hard drive. I have lots of stuff on it that I don’t want to have to reinstall.
Curious about the access denied thing. I get that on the D drive scans because “System Recovery” files are there with some “PC angel” guarding it but I was only running a scan on the C drive when the access was denied. Anyhoo…
Thanks for your help

I would be very wary about doing this because you could 1 lose all your data if the recovery/restore disk is a disk image and it formats the existing drive and installs the image of the drive as it was when you bought it.

If it doesn’t do the format and restore a disk image and only reinstalls windows, care should be taken not to chose format the partition if it is mentioned during the install. However, it should recognise an existing version of windows and offer a repair install, but I don’t know what your Restore Disks are so I feel you would need to seek advice from the retailer who sold it.

Even if there are no great pitfalls, you are likely to need to do a lot of windows updating if you have had your system for any length of time.

Windows overinstallation can preserve programs, settings, data, files, etc.
Just choose ‘Repair’ installation of Windows and install ‘over’ the old installation.

avast! repair could be done too (through Control Panel).

Thank you Tech and DavidR for all that information. Never even thought about having to do all those Windows Updates again. I think I’ll start with the Avast repair and take it from there.

First it has to be established if intanet has a windows CD or a proprietary Restore Disk as the two are likely to be very different.

I have Restore Disks that came with the computer (Emachines).
The clue is in the above comment, I don't believe intanet has a Retail copy of windows, rather an OEM version license (so no copy of the windows CD I believe). That can be very different from a regular windows CD.

That’s right. I have the 4 restore disks that come with my Emachines computer, not the actual Windows XP CD. I guess that means different proceedure applies. Thanks for the heads up.
