Strange files showing up on desktop

I recently noticed a series of about a dozen files named 400.vps.bad.xx showing up on my desktop starting back in February. I deleted them (but didn’t empty the trash just in case), without any consequences. They have started to reappear, but with a different naming convention, e.g., 400.vps.bad.2 21-26-29. The more recent ones are 13.8mb each. When I tried to open them with Quick Look, it indicated they are text documents, so I tried to open one with text edit. The first line includes “avast! Virus Definition File, version 4 (type 0011)”, and the rest is obviously gibberish.

I’m using Avast! antivirus Mac Edition Version 2.74R0 (ServiceKit 1.41). Does anyone have an idea how/why these are being created and what to do about it?

Thanks, Rick

Hi Rick
You may get a better answer if you post in the Mac forum ;D

These are created when avast fails to update the VPS.

Also Please make a new post in the Mac section of the Forum so the developers can notice your post
