Seems strange to me…
I discovered a new icon in my pop-up task bar.
The one at the bottom here on Win Home XP, sp3.
It’s named “HOSTS_Anti-Adware-main.exe”, when my pointer rolls over it.
I have AVAST Free, (plan to upgrade soon), and
I have MBAM installed also.
I don’t know WHERE this “HOST… main.exe” thing came from.
It appears to be neatly installed in C:\Program files.
But it does not show up in Control Panel/Add/Remove and there is no uninstall file either.
Strangely, if I right click on it there is an option that does say uninstall but,
clicking on that just takes me to it’s source website AND IT’S ALL IN FRENCH !!!
It does not seem to be a problem, but I don’t think I need it in my system, with all the other
protection I have running already.
I also ran Autoruns, and there is no sign of it there as a startup item.
I just ran a full scan with AVAST!, last night, and all was clean, with the small exception of a
zip file that was reported as corrupted (ignored it).
Anyone know anything about this thing ?
I would like to get rid of it.
Thanks
Yeah, Thanks there, I did a lot more searching too, and found many comments, most of which seemed to say it was NOT a
problem, YET, there were some that said it was bad and possibly a Trojan downloader (whatever that is-I am kind of new
to this).
So, I simply deleted any occurance I could find, 4-5 files and it seems to be gone after 2 reboots.
I did run Malewarebytes as you suggested and I came up clean there. Thanks
I work mostly an a Mac system, and having to deal with this sort of thing is a bit new to me.
It’s amazing that people will actually take the time to screw up other peoples stuff. Why?
I am so glad I found AVAST!. I actually ran this little Laptop for a year or two, without the firewall turned on.
As I read more & more posts here I am learning better, how to keep my system clean and do appreciate your kind
assistance. Thanks, and the best, for the holidays to you.
Jabby
as this seems to be some toolbar… i recomend you run AdwCleaner as this is a specialised tool for remowing browser/toolbar crap
run it and click the delete button…
Oh, wow… I neglected to do that… thank you…
I just ran that one too, and now i’m back here again…
Actually, adwcleaner DID find something else… which got deleted OK.
A couple of Registry Keys which seemed to involve IE, for some reason, which I avoid using
based upon the advice of some other IE users.
Thank You sir.
