Yesterday morning, i started up the computer and attempted to access the internet VIA Internet Explorer. It wouldn’t load, even though my internet connection was working other things such as messenger services would connect I called my ISP, and explained the problem to them, and they told me they thought that my IE was corrupt, so i had to use the address bar in places such as “my documents” etc. to access the internet. My internet explorer is working now, but only since i disabled the web scanner in Avast. I’m using the most recent version of it, and i’ve never had any problems with it before. Any advice??
Here the same problem. Since the newest version of Avast. I can’t acces sites via internet explorer. I also called with my ISP and there are no line problems. When I disable all the services of Avast everything is fine. Windows XP professional servicepack 2 with the latest updates. Avast v 4.6.623 vps: 0511-1.
Before I didn’t have any problems. I didn’t change anything. I didn’t installed any new programs either. Weird.
Anyone?
Update: I disabled the Webshield, now 5 of the 7 services are on. Now I can use Internet explorer again. So it seems that there is a problem with the webshield service?
I’m having a similar problem- IE6 will start, run fine for a while, then hang while trying to load a page. No error message, just browser window goes blank and it sits there looking as if it’s loading page but not actually doing anything. The really odd thing is that if you then look at the view menu, the “configuration” option has been replaced by a “text labels” option. The only way to get the internet back up and running is to restart computer.
I’ve tried installing firefox 1.01 and this does the same thing (minus the text labels thing). Anyone know what’s going on?
If you configure the proxy server into IE options to 127.0.0.1 and port 12080, will it work?
To change the proxy:
Internet Explorer: Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings > Uncheck ‘Use a proxy server’
Firefox: Tools > Options > General > Connections Settings > Check’ Direct connection to the Internet’
I tried both: 1. proxyserver checked and address 127.0.0.1 and port 12080 and webshield on. 2. proxyserver unchecked and webshield on. Neither of these settings does work. Only when I disable the webshield in Avast I can use internet explorer. When I use file explorer and type internet addresses manualy it is working with webshield on.
So it seems to me that there is a problem with the webshield and not a problem with the settings. Before the last upgrade there was no problem at all.
Every time I access the internet where Avast runing in background, I get a Avast warning for finding a virus with file name: (http://home.earthlink.net:80/~hvtopiwala/loudcash.exe). I can not find that file in my computer.
Can any one explain that!

KRA, avast! is telling you that the file you are trying to download from home.earthlink.net named loudcash.exe is a virus. It is not on your computer because avast! Webshield is preventing the virus from being downloaded. You should get a message in the popup warning telling you to abort the connection.
For the IE problems:
- What firewall are you using, and have you given webshield permission to access the internet?
2)Under webshield setup: basic-Web scanning, intelligent stream scanning checked, port 80 redirected, ignore local comms unchecked
advanced-show detailed info to see what is happening - Are you running XP (SP2?)
- Are you using any other mail proxies for spam or ?
- In IE, connections/lan settings proxy unchecked
- Does the avast! log viewer indicate a problem?
- Could you start your own threads to make it easier to help with the individual problems?
If web shield gave the warning it would also give the option to abort the connection (e.g. stop downloading the page or file), was it this or the Standard Shield warning which would give more options because it is on your HDD. If it was web shield and you aborted the connection, then you won’t find it on your HDD, it wasn’t downloaded.
Can you edit your links so they aren’t active, so no one can stumble on to it either out of curiosity or accident, just put spaces on either side of the :// as I have done in the quoted text.
- Windows XP firewall: Yes Avast has the permission to access the internet
- I tried those settings now: but still the same problem
- Yes (I already gave the specs in my post)
- No
- Yes
- No
- The problem is similar to the post of “reptic” and “casinosoul” (Casinosoul gave the exact description to what is happening) So I think this is the right thread to post.
Only when I disable Webshield I have a normal working internet explorer and normal access to the internet. With the former version of Avast there was no problem with the webshield enabled!
In the past (I’m using this program for more than 2 years now without any problem) I didn’t have to change settings to make the program work. So I still think there is a problem with the program not with my settings. And I don’t want to change settings to make the program work. That’s for experts and I’m not…
FransH, are there specific sites you can’t access? If so, a few example URLs?
https redirected to port 80 or similar? Or you can’t access the internet at all?
My homepage does start, but other sites are impossible to access.
But this answer from Techie 101 in the thread of Bert Turner: “Must disable Avast to browse… Oh man.” explains enough to me I’m confident waiting for the next update, until then I disable Webshield service.
Techie101: My goodness! Web Shield has caused a rain of terror upon us!
Ok, general information. The Web Shield is activated upon boot by default. If you turn it off, using the TERMINATE button, it will not enable by a merely starting the OAP module. You will need to go into the WS module and use the Continue command.
The Web Shield for some reason unclear right now “filters” too good! Some sites appear to it as “suspicious or dangerous” and it will not let them pass. This can be remedied by adding them to the Exceptions list within The WS module under Customize, or try disabling the “Intelligent Stream scanning” function under the Basic tab.
Zone Alarm has a separate problem because it interacts with Port 80. Search the forum for the solution.
You do not need to disable the entire Avast Resident Scanner if you are having surfing difficulty.
Just disable the Web Shield until the issue/s can be resolved.
Why remove ALL protection when only a small “limitation” is necessary.
The Web Shield is an excellent new feature but with all new things comes some “bugs” which everyone here and the Avast Team are working to resolve (as always. )
Good luck.
Just trying to localize the problem to see if anyone can help. I am running XP SP2 on 3 different machines with latest avast!, using browsers Opera, IE, Maxthon, Avant, Netscape and Firefox with no such problems; firewalls KPF, SPF, ZAF (SP1). So suspect one of your installed programs or its configuration is incompatible with the .623 upgrade. But if you are using no other proxies, and only XP firewall, then ? Have you tried the other suggestion of blanking the redirect port in webshield and setting up the proxy in your browser (for http only) to 127.0.0.1 port 12080? And you are not running a VPN?
I too have the same problem ever since the program was automatically updated last week to the new version 4.6.623. If I stop Web Shield everything is fine. Not only that I can " restart" the module after 20 minutes and while is still indicates it is waiting for a subsystem to start I can surf just fine. I just tried disabling Zone Alarm but still can’t get Web Shield to run without indicating it is waiting for a subsytem to start. For the record I am running XP with SP2 750 MB RAM.
If Web Shield is a new feature I’ll just disable it for now. I have used Avast for 2 years and think its a great product.
Same problem started occurring for me yesterday. Couldn’t browse anything either with IE or Firefox. Uninstalled avast and everything became fine again. Downloaded and installed the newest version of avast. Everything good now. Fingers crossed.
Yep, me to. I have been experiencing problems for several days. I realised that it was IE related when Navigator worked fine. If I stop the webshield, no problems. I have been following the various threads about probs with webshield and have tried the suggested ‘fixes’ but the only way for me to browse with IE is if webshield is stopped.
I am running W2K(sp4), IE6(sp1), Kerio Persional Firewall & Spybot.
I am also experiencing this problem. It only seems to be with Web browsers - it happens with both IE and Firefox.
I can normally browse for around 20 mins after turning the PC on or rebooting before the problem occurs.
I can use the ping and tracert command prompt fine. Sometime I can browse to https sites ok but at others even they fail.
MSN and email all work fine.
Hi
Just joined to say I have this problem too.
Since discovering that avast was the problem (and not firewall, connection, etc.) and looking here, I have tried stopping and restarting Webshield and access to webpages is restored.
