I am going slowly nuts! I have run Avast Free Ed for about a year with excellent results however after a
recent update was loaded my System Restore in XP SP2 Pro would no longer work properly.
I tried all sorts of fixes and booting in safe mode - where sometimes it would work. Reformatted the HD
and did a clean install of XP. Problem reappeared! Removed
Avast and tried AVG - no problems!!. Removed
AVG and loaded Kaspersky 7 - no problems except a slow boot time!! Removed K7 and reloaded Avast ( which I like for the quicker boot) and once again System Restore malfunctions.
Can anyone throw any light on this strange phenomenon?
If I remove all restore points with Avast installed SR will operate once only in Safe mode then not at all.
What say you guys ![]()

Hi BrettaMan!
This could be because of an incompatibility between the Avast! Self-defense-module and the System-Restore feature…
This should be solved in the actual Beta. You can find it and the instructions how to install it there:

To temporarily disable the avast self defense module:
- Right click the ‘a’ blue icon on system tray.
- Programs settings > Troubleshooting (tab)
- Disable self defense module
Then you can use System Restore.
Oh, remember to turn on the self-defense module after that.
