I’m also having some very strange issues with both updating in general and the streaming updates but mostly my problem is that I have the updates set to download automatically and obviously, streaming updates is on as shown in Midnights above but the program will not download the updates by itself. I have to manually patch it myself… even though the settings are set to automatic.

Not sure what’s going on here, I’ve done everything possible to try and get the program to update itself, repairing avast (done this 4 times, but this only makes it worse as the avast emergency updater is completely removed from the task scheduler), reinstalling the program (done this about 6 times) and resetting my network settings and modem. All of these have been unsuccessful… the strange thing is, the program tries to update itself on startup of Windows 7, as I see the instup.exe process running but when it comes to the 240 minute duration when its supposed to update itself, it NEVER happens. I even left it on for a whole night before and it never updated even once.

Edit: I forgot to mention this problem started shortly after installing the newest version of Avast! (.2021), started a couple days after the installation but actually started with not being able to connect to the avast update servers AT ALL, infact… I couldn’t connect to anything avast related, not even to download a program as it was downloading at like 10kb/s and my connection was NOT the issue as I had this checked by my ISP provider.

So far today I’ve received only 3 streaming updates and had to manually update the virus definitions…140703.0. Windows 8.1.1

Also just checked my husbands computer and had to manually update to the same version as shown above. His Windows 7 has received 4 streaming updates. He’s still using Avast 2018 but I updated mine to the latest version yesterday.

Both computers are set to automatically update the virus definitions.

VPS and streaming updates have been normal since my Reply#2 in this thread. The servers I’m linked to are now responsive and have the updates to serve.

I don’t know anything about the server’s but I should be getting the VPS updates automatically. Also, more streaming updates.

By saying that you get more streaming updates, they aren’t over and above normal VPS updates as the VPS update when released contains all of the previous streaming updates. It is just that streaming updates don’t hang around waiting for the next VPS Update.

I’m having no issues either, with 62 streaming updates since VPS 140703-0

It shouldn’t really matter what time it is there 1PM it is going to be much later on Central European Time (CET) now 8.30 pm in the UK and 9.30pm CET, so lots would have been released during the day. But you will possibly have received a VPS update, which includes those streaming updates, so the previous streams are removed.

Once again I had to manually update the virus definitions…140703-1. I don’t know what the problem is but it needs to be fixed.

In my avast GUI under components status it says that I have received 141 updates in the last 24 hours

Not sure if this is important or relevant but I’m no longer having issues, I changed a setting in my Avast! program and it now updates on startup and with every subsequent time after (depending on auto update setting), the thing I changed that changed everything was in the branch in the “Update” section, by default I believe the option “My computer is always connected to the Internet” is unticked and through some thorough testing and constant investigation of the Win 7 Resource Monitor. I was able to determine that when this option was unticked, the updater application instup.exe would never run automatically, no matter what. (Even if you have auto updates on :/)

After changing this setting to being ticked though it starts up on startup to check for updates and runs every 3 hours after this (my settings are set to 180 minutes), might wanna try this -midnight and see if it works for you, friend.

Ahhh, sorry then. But I noticed it worked for me right away… but perhaps the program works differently on Win 8… but I did a lot of testing. Around 12 separate tests for when it was off and when it was on and every time it was off, the updater never ran. I always checked my hdd’s disc activity via the resource monitor to detect this and the instup.exe always ran on startup when it was ticked.

It was just some random idea, I doubt it’s even relevant really but just thought I’d pitch in an idea.

Working now…both Streaming Updates and Virus Definition popups with sound. Also same on my husband’s Windows 7.

So once again, earlier today (Approximately 03:02am in the morning), streaming updates just stopped altogether and haven’t streamed since then, and are still not streaming now. Infact… when I check my definitions folder in windows the latest definitions are there. (14070600) but there is absolutely no 14070600_stream folder and there is usually a folder.

My streaming update option is on and always is. Something wrong?

Has Avast ever said that streaming updates WILL or MUST remain continuous, 24/7?

I can imagine outages because of server maintenance, communications upgrades, no new viruses detected for a few hours, etc.

How much additional risk do you feel you take on by the stream of updates stopping for a few hours? Are you feverishly surfing to sites known to spread the very latest malware, released in the past few hours?

I’m not being critical, mind you - it’s great that people keep abreast of how well their systems are working - but I don’t imagine Avast needs someone here to let them know their server is down in order for them to be aware of its functioning.
