I just realised that the combofix log I sent you was not run from my desktop (sorry) - so I have also attached the combofix log that was run from my desktop. Didn’t pick anything up I think, but in case it makes a difference here it is anyway

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:
ComboFix /Uninstall
Run OTS and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.
We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[]Click OK.

hi just an update - pc is running really slow and a lot of software is throwing errors and crashing, I can’t finish a disk check or a defrag as it crashes so i think i’m just going to go for a clean reinstall. i did find a virus on my external drive and successfully quarantined it. thanks for the help and advice
In cases like this there may be a lot of damage to other system files that will become progressive - so you are following the right course
