I have been using Avast for 4 years now and this is the first time I have experienced this. I have searched all over the web and here for answers but got no luck. My windows 7 and avast is always up to date.
I have tried leaving my pc alone for an hour but when I came back, its still stuck at the welcome screen.
Using Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with the latest version of Avast.
Can anybody please help me out? I dont really want to use any other anti virus program. Thanks!

Strange indeed, I have never seen this before.
Just to rule things out :

Scroll down to “Farbar Recovery Scan Tool” and follow the directions for that tool only.
Start a new topic here https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=4.0 descripe your problem, and attach both FRST.tx and Additions.txt logs.

Repair Avast:
Control Panel> Program and Features (Add/remove program)>Select Avast> Select Repair. Reboot when completed
