Suggestion for Avast Home installation

A friend of mine (who I think knows more than me) advised me to choose “Custom Installation” and under Resident Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange since I don’t use an email client (gmail through web interface is my only choice) to manage emails.

Is there any merit in his suggestion?

What should I do if I have already installed full Avast!? How can I uninstall these components without going into the agony of uninstalling rebooting and then installing and rebooting?

Sure - go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / avast! Antivirus / Change/Remove - then select Change in the left column and on the next screen, you’ll see a list of installed modules. So, if you uncheck some providers and click Next, they will be uninstalled.

Personally I would ignore the friends advice about the Internet Mail provider and not only that but set the sensitivity to High.

Why, when you don’t use an email client, because there is malware that comes with its own very small smtp program. There are a number of Trojans that are used to send out s p a m, so it will still use the email ports and in which case avast will scan it and if there is a high number of identical emails in a period of time, avast will alert you.

This may be your first indication that you may have an undetected spambot on your system.

Yes it will consume a very small amount of memory and will have a running process, but to all intents an purposes it will be idle, as you say you don’t use an email client.

Thanx David. I will go by your advice.

Your welcome, it is a handy additional use for to provider.
