SUI will not load when starting Avast

When I start Avast I only get the square boy with the scanners listed on the left side. The SUI won’t come on (the one with the skins). I have the two boxes checked under settings. The only way I can get the SUI to start is going to the website and clicking and downloading a skin. After that it is never to be seen again!

How are you starting avast?

To open the SUI, you need to:

Right click avast! tray icon → click ‘Start avast! antivirus’

Does this work?

You mean the popup when you right click on the tray icon?

Can you run ashAvast.exe?

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashAvast.exe

There should be an icon on the desktop which will run the same

File not found

How do you mean file not found?

Did you use Run?

Can you try and locate the file via windows explorer?

My Computer…and onwards…

If not, I would suggest a repair of avast!:

Avast RepairXP

Can you try a repair of Avast?
Start–>control panel–>add/remove programs -->avast antivirus → click remove → scroll down and click repair

Avast RepairVista (and I am assuming it is the same for Win7)

Can you try a repair of Avast?
Start -->control panel -->Programs -->uninstall a program -->avast! Antivirus -->Click 'Uninstall/Change -->Scroll down and click repair

Yes the file is not present in the location you stated. I cut and pasted in the run window but came up with an error message stating that the requested file could not be found. I will try to run the repair option you said

OK, let us know how the repair goes.

Also, just realised, have you installed avast! to another location, different to the default?

If you have, my path would be wrong, obviously…

Still no joy. Did the repair and rebooted and still cannot access the file. It does not show in My Computer and clicking on the desktop icon brings up an error message.

No did a standard install. It’s just that that file is nowhere to be found. Only when I go to the website and select a skin will it come up! Weird!

Are there any other files in the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ folder?

If you can find it, how about ashSimpl.exe or ashSimp2.exe

Do you have any other software that can interfere?

Did you have any antivirus before avast!
If so how was it removed?

It may be necessary to run the relevant removal tool for that product.

It seems as though your installation is messed up…

You may have to try a complete re-install.

For a re-installation of avast!:

VERY IMPORTANT - Do not uninstall avast! yet, follow the instructions

  1. Download the most recent version of avast!
    Make sure to download the Full setup file, NOT the ‘universal installation file’
  2. Download the avast! Un-install Utility
  3. Disconnect from the net
  4. Uninstall avast! through ‘add/remove programs’
  5. Reboot into safe mode and run the avast! un-install utility
  6. Reboot
  7. Install the the latest version of avast!
  8. Re-connect to the net.
