Super slow scans?

Hi. I’ve installed Avast Home Edition on my computer running Windows XP with 3Gb of memory and a P4 2.8Gh processor. It is running VERY slowly. I started a “Thorough” scan some 16 hours ago – yes, 16 hours ago – , and it’s only about 30% done! I have 3 physical hard drives in my computer, with a total of about 800Gb of HD space. I realize that a “thorough” scan will take longer, but this can’t be normal, can it? I can see that it is sometimes taking a log time to scan run of the mill jpg and gif files, often spending nearly a second on a single file. At this rate it will take nearly two days to do an initial scan!

It is also slowing down other operations on my computer, which is otherwise well-maintained and runs very smoothly.

Is this how it is? Or is something wrong somewhere? It appears to be operating normally, just ridiculously slow. ??? :o

Any information will be appreciated.

Thank you.

Please see this thread - you may find some useful information there.

Especially note that some “slow down” crept into the current production release that is corrected in the present beta program and will become the current release fairly soon.

If you have more questions or concerns we will try to assist further.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve seen the thread you referred me to.

I’m not really sure how to interpret it when you say some “slow down” has crept into the current production release. At the rate it was scanning, it would have taken about 48 hours to do my entire computer, which, offhand, seems about 24 to 48 times longer than one might reasonably expect. That’s really some “slow down.” I aborted the scan. But I’m finding that my computer is still slugish, especially on web pages, in a way that it was not before I installed Avast.

I see that there are a couple of Avast proceses running in task manager that I am unable to shut down, even via the services console in computer management. Is there anyway to just run Avast manually, and not have it resident 24/7?

When the “slow down” is corrected, what kind of performance can one expect from Avast scaning about 700Gb on a P4 2.8 machine?

Thank you.

It’s not possible to say what performance to expect - especially for scanning, as it heavily depends on the particular disk content, drives, filesystem, …

Anyway, you are welcome to update to the latest beta version. As alarnf said, some problems from the previous release were already corrected, so it might improve the speed. Right now, we are not aware of any further slowdowns… so you can expect the speed of the beta to be the same as the speed of the next update to come.
