SuperAntiSpyware

I have been using SuperAntiSpyware free edition for a while with no apparent problems. Having read a few reviews of it i am now left a little confused. Some say its brilliant and some say stay well away from it as it install a rogue .dll file at startup(i am thinking a lot of the bad reviews are fakes from competitors).

Just wanted to know what everyone else’s opinons of it are and who here uses it??

Some of the reviews i have read…

DavidR uses SuperAntiSpyware Pro but as you have MBAM then SuperAntiSpyware free is a good seccond opion scanner.

By the way supportcave.com is blocked by hpHosts HOSTS file:

You’ll find more information in a recent discussion on this forum:

This may sound stupid but one of the files it is saying is a tracking cookie is…

C:Users\Justin\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\justin@questionmarket[2].txt

I have unhidden files & folders to check this file yet why can i not see the cookies folder? I get as far as the windows folder and whilst other folders are listed cookies folder is not. In other words even with all files and folder unhidden i cannot see this cookie file???

Use Ccleaner to get rid of tracking cookies.

I don’t know where these people dig up some of this cr*p.

I would also say that your reference point doesn’t hold up to close scrutiny either being flagged by WOT “This site has a poor reputation.” http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/supportcave.com and HpHosts as YoKenny mentions.

I think the version being offered here has nothing to do with SUPERantispyware from the legit site, http://www.superantispyware.com (and it may well be a rogue) only get SAS from the manufactures site or a recognised trusted download site.

I think that the preamble on this page is more to do with the wares they are touting rather than the legit SAS version.

I certainly wouldn’t consider this a discussion more a pitched battle of one opposing view.

Yep.

I downloaded my version from CNET

You also need to allow viewing “Protected Operating Files” (not recommended).

Ok i think i will leave it. So all in all everyone seems to agree the SuperAntiSpyware is a good piece of software?

The legit one you got from Cnet, yes it is fine as a backup on-demand anti-spyware scanner.

SAS certainly does not install any rogues and it works very well. Overall though, I prefer MBAM.

I hope your question has been answered.

Thanks it has. I have since uninstalled it as all it ever found were tracking cookies and i have CCleaner to do that job. I prefer to stick with Avast and MBAM. I don’t know why but there is just something i don’t like about SUPERAntiSpyware.

I have had SAS Pro for some considerable time and it hasn’t detected anything (but I really don’t expect it to) and I have never scanned for tracking cookies, a waste of time and energy.

I also have MBAM free on this system and MBAM Pro on my other one and it hasn’t detected anything on them either (no surprise), well I fib a little, MBAM has made a number of detections, which unfortunately have all been FPs (mostly on registry entries).

So given this both have found nothing they must be rubbish and one has only found FPs it must be c**p. Well that is too simplistic an approach as they are both fine applications and all security applications are going to have the odd FP and occasional missed detection, that is a fact of life.

Then you are down to what suits you, your needs and your system as they both have slightly different features.

When I was using avast! SAS Free and Mbam Free would occasionally find something.

Now that I’m using MSE, SAS Free and Mbam Free don’t find anything.

Scans with MSE don’t find anything either. Not even any fp’s.

Probably it’s because MSE is blocking fp’s and bad stuff.

DavidR,

I think SAS Pro, Mbam Pro and avast! are blocking stuff on you systems.

Obviously, the free versions of SAS & Mbam can’t block stuff.

I don’t know how you can possibly know what is going on on ‘my system’ better than I, the one who is using settings it and who has set the programs up and who sees any alerts.

Yes, thank you it has.
