Hi, I installed the home version 4.8 1368 with latest updates on an very old laptop which runs windows 98 very well.
Unfortunately the startup of avast is taking too long time due to the performance of the system.
I want to suppress the rootkit startup scan to make some improvement but the option is greyed out in the troubleshooting menu .
I have another system at home with the same version and WinXP pro sp3 and there all the options are present in the troubleshooting menu.
Is this a restriction for Windows 98 or is there another way to achieve my goal ?
Thanks for your help,

Depends on your OS, the anti rootkit doesn’t work with win9x, winME.
It is run automatically 8 minutes after start-up, when you run an on-demand scan with a sensitivity of Standard or Thorough (not Quick) it is run as part of that scan too.
As has been quoted there is no need to do anything as the anti-rootkit scan doesn’t work/run in the older OS.
Thank you for your quick answer.
So I have further investigated and observed and it appeared to me it was only the loading time for all the avast services which was long… about 6minutes for 5 services. The machine has a slow clock speed. So I desactivated all the unneeded services and it stays the 3 basics. It loads now in about 3 minutes which is acceptable for such machine.
Standard scanning speed is also correct and acceptable.
Subject may be closed with all my recognition.
Pierre.
What is your CPU and RAM ?
Do you have broadband connection on this system ?
If so (let us know) you could delay the avast update check for a few minutes so it doesn’t use resources early in the boot.
