Hi,
when my email client tries to receive mail drom a specific listserve, i get a popup saying (i translate the annoucement in dutch, i got the dutch version of avast):
“suspected blanco-sequence”
Any comments?
Thanks
This sounds like the Heuristics in the mail provider detecting a string of blank spaces ‘Check Whitespaces Sequence’ some people put a number of blank spaces to obscure a true file type in an attachment.
They may be doing this to make you think that the attachment is harmless so you can’t see the end of the file name for example “Innocent_Looking_Text_File.txt .exe” most people will not see the .exe extension in the small window and think it is a harmless text file.
In my opinion there really is little valid reason for this use (a long string of spaces in a filename) and is suspicious, that is what avast is warning you of. You can choose to ignore the warning (allow the email to be received) or act on it (delete it, especially if the email and attachment is unexpected), this warning is not saying that the file is definitely infected but suspicious.
