'Suspicious item reported' takes quite a long time . . .

I have Avast IS on a Windows 7 box. Everything seems fine, but the reporting of problems with incoming emails seems to take an unduly long time.
An email comes in (Windows Live Mail) and I look at the Subject line “Hello Beneficiary!”, so I delete it and then maybe ten minutes later, the Avast notice comes up “Suspicious item . . .”
Seems awfully slow, it should happen the other way round in that Avast should be warning me before I even have the chance to open the message or attachment.
Any ideas, or does this happen with other users?
