I downloaded a .rar file titled something like " 57 Mapinfo User maps" via emule expecting maps for use in Mapinfo and maybe finding something interesting.
I opened the archive using winace it was a bunch of tif and jpg files which I thought was odd as mapinfo maps should have *.tab, *.dat *.wor extenstions. Nonetheless I opened one file and it was an extremly disturbing child pronographic image.
I immediately closed winace and did not extract any of the archive. After that I went to check my emule download folder- which is also a shared folder for emul but the archive had disappeared. I used a windows seach to find all *.rar files but found nothing. I then did a search for all *.jpg and tif ( including hidden files) and checked every file visually by viewing alll image files as tile icons- still nothing.
After that I ran a full virus check with Avast home addition and only got a bunch of “unable to scan” results but no infection.
Apart from the feeling of disgust and anger towards the sickos who manufacture child pornography. I am also concerned about my own computer. I have no idea if my computer is now riddled with hidden child pronographic images, and potenitally broadcasting these via emule
I am at a loss as to what to do next, and would appreciate any suggestions.
The only way to be sure all is gone would be to use something like drvscruber to wipe your drive. Or any prog to zero and format and start over. Normal format will not really remove and just having that on your system is against the law in the US. Using Drivescruber you can be sure nothing is left behind.
I’d suggest you remove information which could be used to identify the file from this post.
You need to delete the file from eMule’s incoming folder, and also from the location you extracted the file to if this is different. Use a file shredder such as the one provided by Spybot Search & Destroy or AVG Anti-Spyware- both free programs.
Run CCleaner to delete any temp files. Use secure file deletion in settings.
Personally I would consider wiping your drive to be an over-reaction.
I am just running CCleaner now. I opened the one image within the Archive without extracting the archive. I can’t do a shred as the *.rar file which contained the images could not be found in the emule “Incoming” folder. \
Searching the computer for media files could do it. There are freewares that does this (Picassa, from Google, for instance).
Check specially your folder shared at emule.
